Meet Jessica Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Martin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in a small Texas town. One of those once was oil towns, you know the type. My father passed away from cancer right before my 6th birthday and along with him went my stability. Time passed, but the older I got the more aware of how short-changed my memories were of my father. I have very few images of him and even less of him with me or my family. A few treasured home movies and a few scraps of his existence are all that I have left. I know without a doubt this is where my love for photography bloomed. Recording moments and people for tomorrow because tomorrow’s not promised. Technology pushed me forward even more with digital cameras. After my mother unexpectedly passed away in 2010, I changed my course. I met my now husband, had two kids, moved to Austin and graduated from the University of Texas here in Austin with a Bachelor’s in English. I’m sure you’re wondering why I would choose English. What can you even do with that besides become a teacher? Well, you study stories and the art behind telling a story. There’s no other combination better suited to my skills than to help you visually record your story… your life… your legacy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Hell to the no! Besides both of my parents passing away, I’ve dealt with raising a child on my own, the incarceration of loved ones, and the uncertainty of life, but I’m still here.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in authentic moments mixed with non-traditional people. I am most proud of my ability to persevere. What sets me apart boils down to the ability to see and capture the moments that matter. Whether that be in photography or cinematography.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I love to write bad poetry when I’m having one of those horrible, terrible, no good days to relieve stress.
