Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Melching.
Joshua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I served in the Air Force for just over 20 years, retiring from Special Warfare in 2022. Those years shaped who I am—teaching me leadership, teamwork, and the importance of serving something bigger than yourself.
When I transitioned out, I needed to keep creating. That’s how I started War’s End—hand-carving wooden American flags, each piece carrying the weight of service and sacrifice. Those flags allowed me to turn my experiences into something tangible, something that honored the stories of others.
Connecting with organizations through donating my pieces of art made me realize that there was a significant gap between the resources that I was supporting and those that needed them. This is where I connected with another Special Warfare veteran Jonathan Hodge. Together we founded “The Outreach Project”. We knew that veterans and first responders needed more than symbolic recognition—they needed real resources, support, and connection.
That’s how our podcast and nonprofit directory were born. We share stories, spotlight trusted organizations, and create a space where people can find real help. We’re growing an entire ecosystem of support and within the next 2 months will launch our biggest support system to date.
From my time in the Air Force to War’s End to The Outreach Project, it’s all one mission: service. And as a team, we’re pushing forward. The future we’re building ensures no one who’s served is left behind. And we’re going to make sure of that—together.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After serving 20 years in the Air Force — including a decade in Special Warfare as a TACP and JTAC — I returned home carrying the weight of combat, loss, and transition. Like many veterans, I struggled with identity, anger, grief, and the invisible wounds left behind from deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and Kuwait. I faced the loss of close friends to PTSD and addiction, the passing of my mother during my transition out of the military, and even my own personal failures and rock-bottom moments. But through those hardships, I learned that resiliency isn’t about pretending to be unbreakable — it’s about continuing to get back up, rebuilding purpose, and using those experiences to help others who are fighting similar battles.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I co-founded The Outreach Project, where we connect veterans, first responders, and their families to trusted nonprofit resources. What sets me apart is that I’ve walked this journey—I’m a 20-year Air Force veteran, half of that in Special Warfare. After transitioning out, I turned my challenges into action. I started by handcrafting wooden flags to honor service and give back, and now I specialize in building platforms that bridge gaps—between nonprofits, sponsors, and those who need support. I’m most proud of the impact we’re having, helping people find resources and community when they need it most. Ultimately, I’m driven by service—past, present, and future.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take to heart, it’s this: there are over $400 billion in resources out there for veterans and first responders—yet countless people don’t even know they exist. My mission is to make sure that no one walks alone, that no one feels they have no place to turn. We’re here to be the bridge, shining a light on these life-changing resources and making sure they reach those who need them most. I want every reader to know: if you’ve served or if you’re supporting someone who has, you’re not forgotten. And if you want to help, join us—because together, we’re going to turn that hidden $400 billion into real impact, one life at a time
