Meet Kara Karnovsky of Fineweld Permanent Jewelry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Karnovsky.

Hi Kara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Fineweld really started with a bracelet I wasn’t planning to get.

I was in Asheville, North Carolina, for a bachelorette weekend when our group decided, completely on a whim, to get permanent jewelry. I’d been following the concept since the early days, but experiencing it myself made something click. We each designed something personal in a matter of minutes, and afterward, every time I looked at my wrist, I thought about that perfect day, the trip, and my friendships. I felt loved.

And then the product-development part of my brain kicked in: what an incredibly cool experience, and I could absolutely build on this.

In hindsight, it made perfect sense. Before working in tech, my background was in product design and development, partnering with brands like H-E-B and Anthropologie to create entire product collections. I’d spent years working directly with people to understand what genuinely resonated with them, then figuring out how to turn an idea into something physical they were excited to have in their lives.

I came home to Austin, spent two and a half weeks researching the market, and then worked directly with leading welding manufacturers on equipment and safety training. From the beginning, I wanted Fineweld to feel like an accessible luxury and a shared activity: something beautiful and personal that you encounter somewhere you’re already enjoying yourself. No appointment across town, coordinating everyone’s schedules, or fighting traffic to get there. You stop by, create something you love, and five minutes later, you’re wearing it. It’s just…easy.

That was 2023. Today, Fineweld is a team of 12 creating permanent jewelry experiences across Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio, from intimate celebrations and public pop-ups to corporate events and national conferences with thousands of attendees. The scale has changed, but what I loved about that first bracelet really hasn’t: a seemingly small creative act can hold an incredible amount of meaning and bring you right back to a person, place, or special moment every time you look at it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Fineweld grew because we said yes to almost everything. Growing Fineweld well has meant learning when to say no.

This is my third business, and one thing experience has taught me is that there is always more to learn. I’m incredibly grateful for the mentors, fellow business owners, partners, suppliers, and industry experts who have shared their experience with us along the way.

One of our biggest challenges has been putting the structure in place quickly enough to keep up with growth. The Fineweld experience is designed to feel joyful and effortless, but creating that “effortless” behind the scenes takes a tremendous amount of thought, from our curated product selection to our guest and event workflows. As we’ve grown, we’ve built better systems, strengthened our team, and become much more intentional about where we focus.

We’ve also been repeatedly schooled in the fact that every yes is a no to something else. The unexpected upside is that when something isn’t right for Fineweld, we can often send it to another permanent jewelry artist we know and recommend. The community of small business owners, partners, suppliers, manufacturers, and fellow artists around us has been incredibly generous. As we’ve grown, it’s been especially meaningful to become a more established part of that community and be able to return some of the support that helped us get here.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fineweld is an events-based permanent jewelry company, but I really think of us as an experiential company whose medium happens to be custom-made jewelry.

Our team of 12 does anywhere from 10 to 40 events each month across Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio. We’ve partnered with national brands including Lululemon, Thompson Hotels, Madewell, Swift Fit, and Life Time Fitness, alongside wonderful local businesses, nonprofits, event planners, and private hosts. We can scale from five friends around a table to a national conference with 1,000+ attendees.

What I’m proudest of is how all the pieces come together. There’s a tremendous amount of thought behind what ultimately feels like a very fun, easy five minutes: the chains and charms we curate, the way a guest moves through the experience, the little details and Easter eggs in the brand, and, especially, our team helping each person bring their idea to life.

And our team is remarkable. On any given weekend, you might have your bracelet welded by someone earning her master’s degree in psychology, someone who runs a travel business, an actor whose latest film premiered at SXSW and screened at Tribeca, or a biochemical engineer who also happens to really enjoy connecting with people over sparkly things. What they share is warmth, curiosity, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in the person sitting across from them.

Then the guests take over. Someone chooses her children’s birthstones. Best friends get matching charms. Someone commemorates a person they love, a trip, or a milestone. Or they simply find a chain and say, “that one”. They’re the designers; we help make it real.

We offer permanent bracelets, anklets, necklaces, and hand chains in sterling silver, gold-filled, rose gold-filled, solid 14k gold, diamonds, and gemstones. But ultimately, the jewelry is only part of what people take home.

That’s what makes Fineweld interesting for our partners, too. The experience doesn’t entirely end when the event does. Every time someone looks at their piece, it brings them back to that moment. And when someone compliments it weeks, months, or years later and asks about it, suddenly they’re telling the story of where they got it, who they were with, and the event, brand, or message that brought them together. Something they wear and see every day keeps that joyful experience top of mind, while the story and meaning behind it continues to ripple outward into new conversations.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m most excited about seeing how far we can stretch the idea of what Fineweld can be!

We’re continuing to grow intentionally through new partners, new places, and new ways to create with our guests. Some of what we’re working on is still under wraps, but our best ideas have always come from listening to our team, our guests, and the brands and event partners who invite us into their spaces. That collaboration and feedback will always shape what comes next for Fineweld.

We share new partnerships, announcements, and where to get #finelywelded on Instagram. There’s a lot I’m excited to share soon.
