Meet Keaja Mathis of Keeslayss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keaja Mathis.

Hi Keaja, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thank you for the opportunity! I never really seen myself as a full time hairstylist at least not so young. I pictured myself in college playing basketball but God had other plans. I do love the game though , I played starting in 7th grade up into my senior year of high school. I was also taking cosmetology in high school as well because it’s always been my dream to open up my own salons , offering all beauty services. Once I was at the point where it was no longer safe to play basketball due to Covid and me not wanting to risk it for my loved ones I took my other known talent and put it to work! All while still in school and trying to work a job that I very quickly learned was not for me. So instead I stayed consistent and practiced as much as I could. I went from 2 clients a week to every month fully booked or close to it in just 2 years, staying consistent and building my clientele. Once I seen I had the support I knew I could make it something bigger

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hair business has taught me so much as a young lady growing into something such as a Business Women. I’ve learned how to obtain my image and stay professional , as a 19-year-old hairstylist I’ve run into clients not holding up to my policy , clients who’ve tried to take advantage and devalue my knowledge as a young hairstylist I’ve had clients attempt to “ run off “ with a hairstyle without paying me but throughout all of that I feel like the most challenging experience was me finally realizing when it was time for me to take my business to the next level which came with big girl decisions and big girl money. I went from working out our home living room to renting out studio rooms to building my own studio room! I had to learn to be patient , thanks to my supportive mother who helped me, actually taking the time to get everything done the right way. Greatness takes time and it definitely was a process. It took almost the whole year of 2022 to finally get it all together and every single obstacle, step , and dollar was worth it! I’m still decorating and making the inside feel like home but it’s coming together just like I pictured if not better!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business was built from scratch, literally. I specialize in knotless braid , tribal braids , feed in braids , soft locs and more , everything is on my my website. I love working with creative hairstyles , styles that stand out and test my skill. There are so many great hairstylists in Austin but if I had to say what sets me apart from the rest, I would definitely say it’s the experience and of course, the end result in every style but the experience I give to each and every one of my clients isn’t the same. Some clients love to have a conversation while others love to sit in silence, while others may want to take a nap. In all instances, I make sure my client is comfortable and satisfied. Even on the days when I’m not 100%, I never let that show to my clients. I also provide hair in every style listed on my website which is always a plus. Being a hairstylist isn’t always the easiest but I still want to give a big Thank you to every single person who has supported me in any way shape or form. I started this business off with 0 clients, a dining room chair, and a 10-inch ring light. Not knowing where this route would take me and now here I am telling my story.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned throughout my journey so far would have to be that all money isn’t good money. Put yourself and your mental health first especially as a stylist interacting with so many people in just a month at a time. It’s okay to turn down negative clients , or client’s who don’t respect your policy. Too much leeway will never gain respect. If you don’t respect your policy your clients won’t either. Also , always stay in your own lane , never compare your work to others , practice makes progress and keep God first!
