Meet Lupita Adams of Dear Austin Coffee Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lupita Adams

Hi Lupita, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I immigrated to Austin from Mexico in 2006 with my two daughters. Through the hardships of navigating single-parenthood and being in a new country, my passion for entrepreneurship arose.
My inspiration from Austin has come to be a recurring theme in all of my business ventures. From starting Purrfecto cat lounge to help reduce euthanasia in the community, to my newest business appropriately named Dear Austin coffee shop.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As you can imagine, juggling motherhood with the time-consuming work of owning and operating businesses can be very hard to manage. Although, my daughters have been my driving force and have kept me going through the hardships.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I opened Dear Austin coffee shop in May. It’s located right off the busy streets of South Lamar and next to Zilker neighborhood favorites like East Side King and Moonlight bakery. It’s a coffee shop born out of love for the 78704, the neighborhood I raised my daughters in. It’s an area that I have a strong connection to, having planted my roots there when I moved to Austin almost 20 years ago.

The space where Dear Austin is located is where the former beloved coffee shop, Irie Bean used to be. A place not only dear to the neighborhood, but also myself as my kids grew up hanging out there with their grandparents. It’s because of these close ties that when Irie Bean closed its doors last November, I became committed to preserving the magic of the space.

The mission of Dear Austin is to unite everyone around their love for the city. I am trying to create an environment that fosters community through an empathetic lens. At Dear Austin, it doesn’t matter who’s been here longer because at the end of the day, someones story brought them here and we all have that in common.

We want to hear everyones story, so we have an interactive mural where visitors can write their love letters to Austin!

We offer a variety of drinks from mimosas and frose at our outdoor bar, to delicious coffee, and even bubble tea! All of our coffee and teas are locally roasted/brewed by Texas Coffee Traders. We also offer small bites from Austin staples like Mr. Natural and Vegan nom!

We are located right in front of Purrfecto and have a special cat-themed drink menu available for the visitors to order from during their time with the kitties.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
As a business owner, Covid-19 taught me the a lesson in resilience and adaptation. It was a hard time to be a business owner but my clients needs were still there, I just had to pivot in order to meet them.
