Meet Madi And Ella Carr of Downtown Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi And Ella Carr

Hi Madi and Ella, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We grew up in a small Florida town called Crystal River. Music has always been a huge part of our lives, and we grew up singing and playing together. Our parents exposed us to a wide range of classic rock, folk, and country, and encouraged us from a young age to pursue music. Madi has always loved performing, and has been singing and playing guitar on stage for as long as she can remember. By high school, she was gigging professionally in Jacksonville and released an album when she was 18. Ella learned how to play bass about 2 years ago and began performing with Madi after she graduated high school. At the beginning of 2023, we decided to take a leap of faith and move to Austin to further our music careers. We knew no one in Austin, and street busked before we found gigs on 6th Street. After about a month, we got a one-night-a-week residency at a 6th St venue that has now turned into 5 nights a week, including a night with a full band and another with a fiddle player. On May 20th, we released our debut album “Heart and Fire” on all online streaming platforms. The album consists of 8 original songs that could best be described as an Americana blend of folk, rock, and country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey of an artist is never simple, and we’ve definitely faced our challenges and uncertainties along the way. When we moved to Austin, we knew no one and had no connections. We rented a room with a month to month lease above a bar on 6th street. During the day, we’d try to get gigs by walking up and down the street passing our business card out to bars. At night, we’d busk for tips on the street. There was a lot of uncertainty about our future during that time, but thankfully we now have a residency 5 nights a week at a venue. The transition from living in a small Florida town to living on 6th street was exciting but also a very challenging and overwhelming adjustment. Our parents have always been very supportive of us and instilled a powerful love of music from a young age. During the process of finishing our album, we unexpectedly lost our mother. We are striving to keep her legacy and memory alive by continuing to play and write like she always encouraged us to do.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are an acoustic duo. Our tight vocal “blood” harmonies combined with Madi’s flat-pick guitar and Ella’s acoustic bass create a unique small-town sound.
The Americana-style of our original songs pay clear tribute to the artists we grew up loving, but also are uniquely our own with their vulnerable, honest lyrics and stories. In addition to performing soulful original songs, we cover a wide range of classic rock, folk, and country favorites, drawing influences from Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and Tyler Childers. We deliver lively shows, and our musical chemistry is undeniable.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We have found an amazing circle in Austin’s music community. Having not known anyone when we moved here, the thought of immersing ourselves in the scene was very intimidating, but many of the established artists and venues took us in as their own and have given us so much support and guidance without expecting anything in return.
We do get homesick for Florida and its nature. Austin summers are more brutal than Florida’s. Austin traffic goes without saying.
