Hi Maria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sweet Understanding Counseling opened in 2022 to create a space where clients felt supported throughout every step of their counseling journey. Whether you’re new to therapy or have years of experience, my goal is to minimize the intimidation of asking for help. We collaborate to create personalized treatment goals, practice sitting in uncomfortable emotions, and identify what is truly going on so you can leave feeling a sense of relief.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One obstacle I have faced is finding ways to stand out in a sea of mental health professionals, especially during this time of financial hardship that many Texans are facing. To help make therapy more accessible, I accept Aetna, Cigna, and Quest Behavioral Health insurance plans. For those who prefer not to use insurance or wish to maintain additional privacy, private pay is also available.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I provide virtual Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Online counseling allows clients to learn new coping skills, process their emotions, and work on treatment goals all from the privacy of their home. I also host in-person sessions at my office in North Austin by the Domain. I support parents and working professionals, with a focus on empty nesters and first responders. I am passionate about redefining what it means to take care of yourself and emphasizing that asking for help is a sign of strength.
What makes you happy?
Professionally, I find fulfillment when clients experience “aha” moments or apply a new coping skill outside of sessions. Personally, spending time with loved ones and designing my house to feel like home fills me with joy.

- Individual Sessions: $135 for a 55-minute session.
- Family Sessions: $165 for a 55-minute session.
