Today we’d like to introduce you to Mars Morningstar.
Hi Mars, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been into anime and cosplay for well over a decade, and have been to many an anime convention over that span of time! I grew up super cringey and dorky, your average ”kawaii girl” LOL! I have always been a creative person. I took theatre, art, choir, and even dance classes in and outside of school, at a few different points in my life. The fine arts have always been a passion of mine! In 2022, after playing and winning second place at a “so you think you can be a drag queen?” Audience participation game at one of those said anime conventions, I was scouted by Texan Heat Nerdlesque! My first time ever on stage, I cosplayed as fem Crocodile from One Piece! We had so many fun shows and even had some not-so-great ones within the year I was a part of the cast, but what made it better was that we were all there together. Although Texan Heat no longer exists, disbanded in 2023, I will always be grateful to Dat Ash and Heaven Lee Court, the producers, for believing in me, seeing the talent in me, and helping me get on the stage. They’re the main reason I was even able to get this start and get opportunities to do shows with the other cosplay troupes in the convention nerdlesque/drag scene! Not long after I had started with Texan Heat, before it disbanded, I started being asked to spotlight at Halcyon, a coffee bar that hosts drag brunch! After performing there a good few times, the hosts came to the decision to add me to the main cast! Back when I first joined, it was called something different, but in modern day it’s called, Brunch with the Babes! I wouldn’t have been able to start my drag journey out with such a bang if it weren’t for this brunch gig and for that, I also am also thankful to Maxine La Queen and Miss Adrienne Park. From then on, I started getting more bookings and getting my name out there, making more moves and working hard. Now, four years later, I’ve accomplished a lot that I can say I’m very proud of myself for. I will never forget what got me to where I am today. Early in my drag career, I was given many amazing opportunities to work with well-known artists, which in turn, helped increase my recognition. While yes, I put in my own effort, hard work, and dedication to my craft, getting those opportunities definitely helped me get my name out there, and I’ve never hidden that fact from anyone. If anything I make silly jokes about being a drag nepo-baby because, I kinda am LOL!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although there have been a few bumps, my drag career overall has been pretty smooth honestly! I have had my fair share of booking struggles, both when I started out and more recently. I’ve also unfortunately come into contact with quite unsavory queens and kings over the years. I’ve had to speak out about certain things that were negatively impacting the community because, people continue to hype up bad people. Finding my own style was also a struggle, having done cosplay and normal makeup for so many years. It’s been fun watching my makeup skills grow and change as time goes on. I’m still experimenting with my mug to this day!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a drag, burlesque, and nerdlesque artist, as well as a kaigai idol on the side! I am kind of a jack of all trades, if you will! I can do just about anything I set my mind to, to the best of my abilities. I’m very versatile and can be two completely different people one day to the next! I am very proud of my craft, and how far I’ve come. What I’m most proud of is the Pinkie Pie look I created for a My Little Pony drag show hosted by Pixel Vixens! That’s gotta be the most fun I’ve had onstage, confetti and good vibes only! One of my biggest attributes in drag is my detailing. I’m very purposeful with how I style my outfits and accessories and even how I do my makeup! When you look at me in drag, every part of my body will be decorated with something eye catching. I know what works and doesn’t work for me, and I do whatever makes me happy. I’m still relatively new to the idol scene! I’m excited to learn more, get better with choreography and singing, and just have fun with my friends! We’re puppy girl idols called Inu-suki which means “dog love”! We have so many fun things planned for our group and, I’m ready for what’s coming up in the future!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I hope to see the projects I’ve collaborated on with others flourish , and my ideas finally come to life and out of my head. My dream is to achieve stability, so I can pursue drag full time and create even bigger and better projects. I also hope that in the next 5-10 years my drag grows well! I’ve already seen so much growth from when I just started, and I am excited to see what my art will look like a decade later. I’m not sure if my idol group will still be singing and dancing in 5-10 years but, I hope that we get to where we set our goals in 5-10 years.
