Melissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Waxing was never something I planned on doing. In fact, after graduating from esthetician school, it was one of the only places that gave me an opportunity despite having no professional experience. I never imagined I would grow to love it as much as I do today.
After working for a smaller waxing chain here in Austin for about a year, I made the difficult decision to leave because the company’s values no longer aligned with my own. I became increasingly uncomfortable with the way employees were being treated and the direction the company seemed to be heading. After one of my colleagues experienced a physical assault from a client and management failed to take appropriate action, I knew I couldn’t continue working somewhere that didn’t prioritize the safety and well-being of its employees. Especially when that same client was scheduled on my books just a week later.
Leaving was scary, but it ended up being the best decision I could have made for myself. When I reached out to my regular clients to let them know I was leaving, so many of them offered to welcome me into their homes so I could continue waxing them. That support meant everything to me and gave me the confidence to take a chance on myself.
I spent about five months working as a mobile waxer before my tax refund came in, and I used it to make the down payment on my very first salon suite. That was the beginning of Smooth Society.
I’ve been in my own space for almost two years now, building something that reflects my values, my work ethic, and the kind of environment I always wanted to create. I want every client who walks through my doors to feel welcomed, safe, respected, and comfortable being themselves.
Looking back, I never would have imagined that a job I stumbled into would turn into a business of my own. Taking that leap of faith was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done, but I don’t regret it for a second. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it’s been pretty smooth sailing, and I have my amazing clients to thank for that! 🥹💗 I’ve received the greatest amount of support since day one, and their trust in me and continued support have made this journey so special.
The hardest part has been learning to show up for myself, put myself out there, and navigate the ins and outs of marketing and promoting my business on social media. It’s been a learning experience, but I’m so grateful for how far I’ve come!
