Today we’d like to introduce you to Olga Novosselova.
Hi Olga, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began with immigration from Russia and the courage to start over in a new country. I had to build a new life, find my place, and create something of my own through hard work, determination, and a love for the sewing craft.
Over time, I turned my passion for sewing, craftsmanship, and bridal fashion into a specialized bridal alteration business in Austin. Working independently from my home studio, I built a business focused not only on making wedding dresses fit beautifully but also on preserving their character and giving vintage gowns a second life through thoughtful restoration and restyling.
Today, I help brides feel confident, beautiful, and truly themselves on one of the most meaningful days of their lives. Every gown has a story, and I feel fortunate that my work allows me to become a small part of each one.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting over in a new country meant learning to navigate an unfamiliar culture, building financial independence, and finding my own path without the support system I once knew. Building a specialized business from the ground up also took patience, persistence, and a lot of trial and error. Working independently means wearing every hat—from managing clients and scheduling to running the business itself. Over the years, I’ve learned that craftsmanship alone isn’t enough; you also need resilience, adaptability, and the courage to keep going when things don’t work out as planned. Each challenge has helped me grow, both personally and professionally, and taught me to trust my skills, value my independence, and stay true to the quality of work I believe in.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in bridal gown alterations, custom restyling, and vintage wedding gown restoration from my home studio in Austin. But what I really do goes beyond sewing and fitting dresses—I help brides bring their vision to life.
I believe one of my greatest talents is the ability to see a wedding dress through my bride’s eyes. I listen carefully, pay attention to the little things that matter to her, and somehow imagine what she sees and feels, even when she struggles to put it into words. Every bride has her own personality, style, and dream, and I love transforming a dress to reflect exactly who she is rather than simply making it fit.
I have a particular passion and talent for working with lace. Lace is delicate, intricate, and often unforgiving, especially when altering or restyling a gown. I love the challenge of matching patterns, preserving beautiful details, and making changes that look as though they were part of the original design.
I’m especially proud of helping brides turn dresses they like into dresses they absolutely love. I also enjoy giving vintage wedding gowns a second life, preserving their sentimental value while making them feel fresh, beautiful, and personal.
What sets me apart is the combination of technical craftsmanship, creativity, and empathy. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I want each bride to look in the mirror and recognize herself—only feeling more beautiful, confident, and ready for her special day. That moment when she smiles and says, “This is exactly what I wanted,” is what makes my work so rewarding.
What were you like growing up?
I think I was independent, creative, and a little stubborn from a very young age! I started sewing when I was just 14. My sister was seven years older than me, and I was tired of wearing her hand-me-downs. I wanted clothes that reflected my own personality, so I decided the best solution was to learn to make them myself. Looking back, that was probably the beginning of my journey.
When I was 19, I fell in love and decided to get married. There was just one problem: I couldn’t find a wedding dress I liked. Growing up in Russia, the bridal gowns available to me looked old-fashioned and unattractive. I wanted something beautiful, feminine, and uniquely mine. So, naturally, I decided to make my own! At that time, I was studded fashion and design at university, and my teacher agreed to help me with this big project.
My wedding dress turned out to be a great success. After the wedding, my girlfriends began getting married, and they started asking me to make their wedding dresses, too. One dress led to another, and somehow, what began as a young girl’s desire to stop wearing hand-me-downs became a lifelong passion. I’ve never really stopped doing what I love.
I think that experience also taught me something about people that has stayed with me throughout my life. No matter where we grow up or what culture we come from, we’re connected by the same basic human desires. We want to be loved for who we are, understood without having to explain every little thing, and occasionally told that we look absolutely fabulous!
That’s something I carry into my work with every bride. A wedding dress is never just a piece of clothing. It’s a way for a woman to express who she is and how she wants to feel on one of the most meaningful days of her life. I love helping her discover that feeling.
When I look back, I realize that the young girl who wanted to make her own clothes and the woman I am today aren’t all that different. I still love creating something beautiful, solving a challenging design problem, and seeing someone’s face light up when she looks in the mirror and thinks, “Yes! That’s me!”
