Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Bates.
Hi Samantha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved art and creating. I used to watch cake boss and ace of cakes, with a dream of being able to do that. After working at heb as a bagger and cart pusher, I showed interest in bakery. They trained me to decorate cakes, and I took outside classes with wilton as well. Then I was able to transfer to the bakery department as a cake decorator. After years of working for heb, I decided to venture out on my own when I got pregnant. That way I could stay home with my little one while still pursuing my dream. It’s been over 8 years since I started my business anf it’s still going strong. In 2019 I won the people’s choice award for best edible book cake at the cedar Park library. In 2020 I won 3rd place at the ‘that takes the cake show’ in my category of professional masters multi tier novelty. I love to make beautiful works of art for people to enjoy for their special day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s definitely been a struggle as a stay at home mom of 3 little ones and running a business. The area I live in has grown so much, and there’s so many amazing bakers in my area, so it’s been a little saturated recently.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a cake decorator and baker in the kyle area. I specialize in buttercream cakes, fondant sculpted figures, as well as a variety of delicious treats, sweet rolls, and cookies. I’m most proud of my award winning cake at the 2020 that takes the cake show, it was a dream come true getting to compete at that level with so Many other talented bakers. I also created the 2020 viral concha hot cocoa bombs.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Definitely practice, practice, practice. Never be afraid to try something new no matter how hard it seems
