Today we’d like to introduce you to Vinitha Subramanian.
Hi Vinitha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For more than 40 years, Natyalaya has been a premier bharathanatyam institution in Central Texas. Founded by Director Vinitha Subramanian, Natyalaya is known for its rigorous training, performance opportunities, and original, professional-level productions. Each year, Natyalaya showcases several arangetrams, or solo debut performances for accomplished students. Natyalaya students perform all over Texas, often winning awards at competitions. With four branches in Central Texas, Natyalaya has over 20 faculty and interns. Natyalaya also has several productions to its credit.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building and sustaining a dance school over several decades has been a journey filled with both rewarding moments and significant challenges. One of the biggest challenges our Director faced in the early years was balancing her passion for dance with the many responsibilities of family and entrepreneurship.
Living in Austin, she would make the daily drive to Temple, Texas, to teach her students. That commitment meant spending countless hours on the road, while also managing her own business and raising two children. Juggling the responsibilities of being a mother, entrepreneur, teacher, choreographer, and mentor required tremendous dedication, discipline, and perseverance.
There were certainly times when maintaining that balance was challenging, but her love for dance and commitment to her students kept her moving forward. She never viewed the distance or the demands of her many responsibilities as reasons to step away from the art she loved. Instead, she found ways to make it all work, often putting in long hours to ensure that her students received the guidance and training they deserved.
Looking back, those challenges have become an important part of the Natyalaya story. They taught us that building something meaningful takes consistency, sacrifice, and the willingness to keep showing up—even when it isn’t easy. The years of driving between cities, raising a family, running a business, and nurturing generations of dancers have shaped not only our Director’s journey but also the values that define Natyalaya today: dedication, resilience, and an unwavering passion for dance.

At Natyalaya School of Dance, we are dedicated to preserving, teaching, and celebrating the rich tradition of Bharatanatyam while nurturing each student’s individual artistic journey. Our work goes beyond teaching dance steps—we strive to develop disciplined, confident, expressive dancers who understand and appreciate the cultural and artistic depth of this beautiful classical art form.
At the heart of Natyalaya is our Director, who has been an integral part of the dance school for over four decades. Her journey has been shaped by an unwavering passion for Bharatanatyam, a deep commitment to her students, and a distinctive creative vision. Over the years, she has choreographed and presented numerous original productions, bringing together traditional vocabulary, storytelling, music, and innovative choreography in ways that engage both dancers and audiences.
What truly sets her apart is the personal connection she builds with her students. She is not simply their teacher; she is a constant source of guidance, encouragement, and support throughout their dance journey. She invests in each student as an individual, helping them grow not only as dancers but also as confident and responsible young people.
As one of her students beautifully expressed, “Not only was she an incredible dancer and choreographer, but also a wonderful teacher, advisor, mentor, and friend.” That sentiment captures what we believe makes Natyalaya special. The relationships we build with our students often extend far beyond the dance classroom and continue through many stages of their lives.
We are especially proud of the legacy we have built over the years—the generations of students who have trained with us, the original productions we have created, and the many dancers who have carried their love and understanding of Bharatanatyam into their own lives. Above all, we are proud to have created a dance community where tradition and creativity coexist, and where every student is encouraged to discover their own voice while staying rooted in the art form.
Our greatest distinction is perhaps our commitment to our students. The passion for dance that has sustained our Director for more than four decades continues to be the driving force behind everything we do at Natyalaya.
How do you think about luck?
We believe luck has certainly played a role in our journey, but we see it less as chance and more as the blessings and opportunities that have come our way through years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance.
As a team, we choose to look at every experience with gratitude. When something goes well, we count it as a blessing and are thankful for the students, families, opportunities, and support that have helped us grow. When something does not go as planned, we do not see it as failure. Instead, we see it as an opportunity to reflect, learn, improve, and come back stronger.
Over the years, there have been many moments that have opened new doors for us, and we feel fortunate for each one. But we also recognize that those opportunities mean little without the willingness to work hard and make the most of them.
For us, success has always been a combination of blessings, hard work, resilience, and a commitment to continuously learn and evolve. We are grateful for the journey, for everything that has gone right, and even for the things that have challenged us—because each has played a part in shaping who we are today.
