Today we’d like to introduce you to Wiley Ross.
Hi Wiley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved to Austin in 2005 and began living out of my van because it was closer then California or Seattle
I had never been to Texas let alone Austin. I had moved to pursue music and started a band called street light suzie . We toured around and released 2 albums. Our second album was recorded by Guilby Clarke of guns and roses fame. I began painting murals sometime in 2010 and would drive around finding blank walls. . I would find out who the landlord was and get their email. I would contact about 10 a day in hopes that someone would reply.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not all the journey has been smooth. As an artist I feel it’s feast or famine. Struggles included simply finding work or projects struggling with addiction and depression off and on.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in large scale murals and containg portraits. My most well known work is the iconic Willie Nelson and Janis Joplin mural in downtown Austin and was voted 2024 Austin’s best visual artist of the year. I have also had multiple song placements on tv shows like csi and others and have been featured on local news stations for my work with the homeless community I’m also proud of being awarded mentor of the year at my daughter’s elementary school.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
