We recently had the chance to connect with Rachel Means and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Rachel, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Dance is bringing me joy lately. I enjoy Bachata and Zouk!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a visual artist. I experiment with various materials including acrylic paint, ink, wood, wire, fabric, paper, and dried flowers. I’m primarily focused on ink and dried flowers. The flow and tactility of these materials lend themselves well to the beauty, sadness, and gentleness I hope to embody within my work. I also incorporate repetitive practices in my process, repeating words and phrases. The repetition creates an interesting layer of mark-making. And I find the variation that arises out of the repetition very beautiful and captivating. The process of building layers and responding with intentionality to unintentional moments is a reflective and vulnerable process as well.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
My relational dynamics inform and affect my work. Therefore, I consider what breaks and restores bonds between people often. Dishonesty and inconsistency break bonds. Consistency, active listening, and thoughtfulness can be very restorative.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
There is strength in being who you are.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to realizing and sharing a project involving recreated letters to my dad.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Being at the beach – spending time looking at expansive and beautiful bodies of water – fills me with peace.
