Rising Stars: Meet Auriel Farley of New Jersey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Auriel Farley.

Auriel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born in Brooklyn, but raised from Newburgh, NY, the 845. I am a Content Creator, Twitch Streamer, Reactor, and Media personality primarily known for commentary and fighting game community (FGC) content. I am normally known for wearing blue hair, which was accidental at first. The blue hair became the recognizable staple for my online presence, so I kept it. Besides doing content, I have a vast media background including: doing Film School, radio announcing, Photography, and Journalism. I graduated from Bowie State University last year with a Communications major and a minor in Broadcast Journalism. I started playing video games at the age of 4 because of my father, who used to play video games often in between working in the Air Force. Although he doesn’t play as much as he did before, he very much is the reason to why I love playing video games. Growing up I was a major “daddy’s girl.” Whatever he was doing, I wanted to do the same. The earliest games I can remember starting out were ‘Mortal Kombat 2’, ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2,’ ‘Tekken 3,’ and more. I started streaming on Twitch September 27, 2021 and immediately fell in love with being in front of the camera. Although I’ve had my Youtube channel since 2008, I started posted my reactions on there once I started streaming. Since I was streaming at 8PM EST (which can be considered late on weekdays), it was a way for people to watch my videos when they had the time to do so or missed my streams completely. I treat my streams like a show, something to be entertaining and engaging with my chat. My community is called Mermaid Gang or MRMDGNG.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A smooth road? I wouldn’t say that necessarily, but I have learned to love this journey. Trying to get your content out from the ground up comes with its challenges for sure. People view you differently once they see you’re growing and getting “noticed.” It also takes time to not grow as a creator, but money wise too. It takes a while before you start seeing money coming in…that makes sense. I wouldn’t advise someone to just drop their day job and start doing content solely because you need money for your bills and etc. For me, it worked because I was in college at the time and making money on Youtube and Twitch was the side hustle originally. Another challenge is people trying to pry into your personal life. Yes being a content creator is great, but people can often forget how much we as creators are just like everyone else. We just happen to be in front of a camera or post frequently. The biggest challenge for anyone is finding what works best for you and finding your niche.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Content Creator, Streamer, Reactor, and Media Personality. I specialize in gaming, commentary videos, and skits. I think my most proud moment is having people tell me their testimonies of how much they enjoy my content. I get a lot of comments either on my Instagram or Youtube of how much my videos helped through their day, a hard time in life, or how my laugh is very infectious; it means a lot to me that what I do has an influence on them. I try to stay true to myself in videos and I honestly have a lot of fun doing it, so I’m glad to continue to do so. What sets me apart? Besides my blue hair 🙂 I have such a whimsical personality and high energy. I give it everything I got. I can say I am quite relatable with my videos. Being a woman, black woman, who plays games like Tekken or even Call of Duty…and be good at it. Its cool! That it immediately sparks conversation or competitiveness, to which I don’t mind.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Consistency, a proper strategy, high energy, and having the right people in your circle.
