Today we’d like to introduce you to Chizu Takakura
Hi chizu, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in the countryside of Japan. As a child, I was captivated by the cinematic world I saw through my father’s single-lens reflex camera, and that was the moment I fell in love with photography. I began taking photos in middle school, majored in photography at a junior college, and later worked at a photo studio in Tokyo. There, I had the opportunity to assist various photographers, gaining extensive knowledge of lighting techniques for everything from product photography to portraits.
After my time at the studio, I spent about two years as an assistant to Yoshinori Onda, a respected photographer specializing in fashion shoots. Since becoming independent, I have worked as a photographer in Tokyo for over 10 years, taking on diverse projects, including children’s magazines, web content showcasing the charm of different regions across Japan, product photography for Amazon, and image shoots for interior design and speaker companies.
Three years ago, I moved to Austin after getting married. Over time, I have been resuming my work as a photographer, and this year, I have been focusing on family photography. Capturing moments in people’s lives and bringing them joy through my work is deeply fulfilling to me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Transitioning from being an assistant to becoming an independent photographer came with an entirely different set of responsibilities, and securing work right after going independent was very challenging. Back then, there were no personal platforms like social media as we have today. I had to create a physical portfolio (not online, lol) and personally pitch my work to publishers. While juggling part-time jobs, I gradually gained clients and acquaintances who appreciated the quality of my work. Thanks to their support, I was eventually able to make a living from photography alone.
After moving to the US, I had to start from scratch, and to be honest, it’s still a challenging time. However, with the help of friends and clients who value my photos, I’ve been able to gradually take on more and more projects.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in family photography, maternity, couples photography, and lifestyle newborn sessions.
For me, photography is all about capturing what’s real — the little moments, the genuine emotions, and the unique personality that makes you, you. I’m not about stiff poses or overly staged setups. Instead, I love bringing out the warmth and individuality in every story I tell.
What I’m most proud of is the chance to be part of my clients’ lives, even if just for a little while, and turning those special moments into something they can treasure forever. A photo isn’t just a picture; it’s a way to hold onto the feelings and memories of that moment. Whether it’s a family laughing together, the joy of welcoming a new baby, or the connection between two people in love, capturing those irreplaceable moments is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
What makes me different? I focus on keeping our sessions relaxed and fun. When you’re comfortable, your true self shines through — and that’s what makes the best photos. My goal is for you to look at your pictures and think, “This is us, exactly as we are.”
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is capturing authentic moments that truly reflect the people I photograph. Life moves so quickly, and it’s easy to forget the little things — the way your child’s face lights up when they laugh, the quiet connection in a shared glance, or the joy of a new chapter beginning.
Photography allows me to freeze those fleeting moments so they can be remembered and cherished forever. I love helping people see the beauty in their everyday lives and relationships, exactly as they are. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my work can become a meaningful part of someone’s story, passed down and treasured for generations.
