Rising Stars: Meet Darby Perkins of South Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darby Perkins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started taking Bungee classes at Balance Dance Studios when they first introduced the class about five years ago. I loved it immediately and started attending regularly. After a couple of years, the instructor asked if I’d be interested in subbing classes. Eventually, when that instructor stopped teaching Bungee, I stepped into the role and now teach the classes myself.

Around three years ago, I also became the Program Director for the adult classes at Balance Dance Studios. I truly love taking classes myself and helping create a wide variety of offerings for adults—from dance styles to unique fitness options like Bungee. A big part of what I enjoy is making sure people feel welcome, supported, and taken care of when they walk through the door.

I’m really grateful that my job grew out of something I genuinely love—staying active, dancing, having fun, and being part of the incredible community at Balance.

Outside of the studio, I’ve also been a birth doula for nearly ten years, which is another passion of mine. In both roles, I get to support people during meaningful experiences—whether that’s learning something new in a class or welcoming a baby into the world. At the heart of it, I love helping people feel confident, supported, and good about themselves. My hope is to bring a little joy and positivity to people’s lives, whether it’s through bungee or babies.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m grateful to say it’s been a pretty smooth road. In many ways, it feels like things unfolded the way they were meant to. Bungee came into my life naturally—I didn’t go searching for it. I simply tried the class when it was introduced at the studio, loved it, and kept showing up. Over time, opportunities opened up, from subbing classes to eventually becoming the instructor and program director. It’s been a really organic journey, and I feel lucky that it grew out of something I genuinely enjoy doing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I teach Bungee Fitness and serve as the Adult Program Director at Balance Dance Studios. My journey into teaching started as a student. I began taking Bungee classes when they were first introduced at the studio and quickly fell in love with it. I showed up consistently, and over time was asked to sub classes. Eventually, that led to me becoming the instructor, which was something I never initially set out to do.

What I’ve come to love most about teaching is helping people build confidence, overcome fears, and realize that working out can actually be fun. Bungee can feel intimidating at first, but watching someone walk in unsure and leave feeling empowered is incredibly rewarding. I’m also deeply passionate about creating a sense of community—where people feel welcomed, supported, and excited to come back, not just for the class but for the people.

Personally, this path has pushed me in ways I didn’t expect. I never thought I’d enjoy being in front of a group or leading a class. I’ve never been someone who seeks the spotlight, and speaking in front of people used to be one of my biggest fears. Teaching has helped me grow past that and step into a more confident version of myself. Becoming the Adult Program Director has also challenged me to grow as a leader, especially through taking classes myself and understanding what makes a great experience for others.

What I’m most proud of is the community that’s grown at the studio. It’s a space where people feel safe to try something new, challenge themselves, and build real connections. I hope I’ve played a small part in creating that environment. What sets me apart is that everything I do comes from a genuine place—I started exactly where many of my students are, and I truly care about their experience, their growth, and making sure they leave feeling better than when they walked in.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to work with me is to come take a class! I teach two beginner-friendly Bungee classes each week as part of the adult schedule at Balance Dance Studios, and anyone can sign up online.

I also offer private Bungee sessions through Fuse Bungee Fitness, which are scheduled directly with me based on studio availability. Those are great for small groups, special events, or anyone wanting a more personalized experience.

I’m always open to collaborations as well—whether it’s partnering with other instructors, local businesses, or creative projects. And of course, sharing and tagging on social media is always appreciated. It’s such a fun way to connect, grow the community, and spread the word about Bungee!
