Rising Stars: Meet Dennis Walker of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Walker.

Hi Dennis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started a podcast interviewing mushroom entrepreneurs in 2020 during the Pandemic — within a few episodes, people from all over the world started reaching out to me wanting to share their mushroom entrepreneurship journey. Over the next few years, the Mycopreneur Podcast evolved into a true multimedia platform and international community with thousands of people connecting through our weekly podcasts, newsletter, and online incubator all targeted at strengthening and uplifting the international mushroom innovation space. I now travel the world to emcee and do comedy shows at mushroom festivals and psychedelic conferences while doing publicity and consulting for a full roster of mushroom businesses.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The strength of the Mycopreneur community and the decentralized nature of the mushroom space in general has lent a resilience and moxie to the platform that has helped it continue to grow and prosper even when adversity came knocking. Challenges have included censorship across social media platforms, taking on too many projects to do all of them justice, and learning when to say ‘no’ among other opportunities for growth — but truthfully, the mushrooms have a knack for knocking down obstacles and creating win-win situations for those who form a reciprocal relationship with them.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
About a year into doing the Mycopreneur Podcast, I started making highly niche psychedelic satire skits on social media. The humorous critiques were targeted at the emergent psychedelic industry and the intersection of psychedelics, capitalism, VC bros, consumer culture and this incredibly unique and often unbelievable timeline we’re living in. Ironically, taking this satirical and non-serious approach to running a mushroom / psychedelic media platform has gotten me invited to places like Harvard Law School and SXSW and profiled in mainstream media like Wired, Forbes and Rolling Stone among others.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Mushroom Entrepreneurship is a future-proof hustle, and humor and wit will never go out of style.
