Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Call.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my journey. It starts when I was 14 years old, I grew up watching my mother do hair. My grandmother cut and styled hair. And my father also cuts hair as a barber. My mother went to prison when I was 10, so I grew up with my father he has 6 daughters, me being the oldest I did my little sister’s hair very often and my grandma did mine. I watched and learned from my grandmother and began to get into braiding my own hair cause she told me, “I won’t always be here to do your hair forever. You’ll have to learn yourself.” I was very close to my grandma so I was always under her watching and learning. When she passed away in 2020 from stage 4 stomach cancer, I knew I was next in line. As I began to get more into it, my popularity grew and I started to realize braiding is a given talent that turned into passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It had not always been a smooth road. Having to Deal with challenges such as Covid, times have been a little scary. Having to get people to wear masks and to adjust to our new style of living in 2020 while trying to boost a newly opened business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love my art/passion. I specialize in knotless braids. I do a variety of hairstyles but I’m most proud of how far I’ve come with the knotless braids. They are what’s trending at the moment, I feel and have been told many times by clients my braids are neat, full, and very consistent. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come with those, and proud to be known as one of the many braiders in Austin capable of doing them!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Growth. There are many ways to define success but growth has to be the biggest for me. Growing and expanding in every aspect is success. Setting a goal and accomplishing it is success. Because we all start from the ground, to make something out of nothing is success. I like to count every little thing I can as a win, if you look at it as a loss you’ll never have the faith to overcome those little mistakes. You’re always be successful when you have a successful mindset.
