Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Elizabeth.
Hi Faith, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, it started back in 2016… musical.ly was a huge thing during that time, so I decided to hop on that train. After making silly comedy skits for a couple years, I got a comment that was like, “You sound like Barbie”. I ended up replying to it with my best Barbie impression (which was awful, in retrospect) but to my surprise, people really enjoyed it! The comment requests kept rolling in, from Dora to Jojo Siwa to other trending audios at the time. That one comment ended up kicking off a comment thread of impression requests that lasted for years. After that, I went to college for vocal performance and expanded my impression repertoire, but I have to say the journey never ends: I’m always learning a new voice or trying to sing a new song, and I think it’s important to keep pushing past my comfort zone in that way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I didn’t really have access to a ton of resources that would’ve supported what I do growing up. I had zero connections to anybody who knew about music or social media: nobody in my family sang either, haha. I learned a lot about how to sing from YouTube since it was the only way that type of knowledge was accessible to me at the time. I remember that feeling of not being able to have one on one feedback and it was absolutely brutal. Going to college and taking voice lessons for the first time was something I felt so privileged to do, and I’ve taken away so much from that.
After I internalized that higher level of education, I decided I wanted to do impressions, but I also wanted to incorporate some education on the voice as well: akin to how YouTubers helped me grow as a singer when I was younger. Because of that, I started a “Trying to Learn” series where I broke down the process of how I impersonate singers, ridiculous memes, and pop culture moments, so that I could keep education at the forefront in a lighthearted way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do impressions and I sing a lot! I’d say I’m most known for my impressions, and a lot of people know me specifically for my “Trying to Learn” series where I break down popular memes. I think it’s hilarious to break down a meme into that much detail because it’s so unnecessary. It’s so weird because I’m very serious about vocal education, but juxtaposing that education against a brainrot 7 second meme makes it ridiculously unserious at the same time. I’m proud of my approach there. I feel like in the dumbest way, I’m maybe giving people a bit more music knowledge to carry with them.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The internet has so much information, so take advantage of it! We live in a world where so much knowledge is literally right at your fingertips, so do with that what you can.
