Rising Stars: Meet Gabe Herrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabe Herrera.

Hi Gabe, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It started when i picked up my dad’s camera in 2000 (8th grade). Well, maybe earlier than that… I remember always having a disposable cameras and taking it everywhere and to the YMCA summer camp! Anyways, back to my dads camera. I didn’t know what I was doing, but I played around some going through rolls and rolls of film (sometimes good, mostly shit – haha).

Then, Good Ol’ Santa Clause gave me a digital camera, and then I really started to have fun! I started photographing different bands that friends were in, and of course all the selfies and friend pictures for MySpace! The private high school i went to was brand new and didn’t offer electives, but they had scholastic competitions with other private schools in the state. Despite not having an art or photography class, they were able to still let me enter some photos in a competition, and I was shocked that I ended up placing 1st and 2nd.

It wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I took my first real photography class while studying graphic design. That’s when I really started to understand how a camera works, how to process and develop my own film, and even made a pinhole camera, which I want and plan on doing again!

Anyways, after moving back home to the Hill Country is when my hobby turned into a profession. Friends were asking if I could take photos, and then their friends and family, and so on. Small family portraits turned into graduation pictures which then blew up into weddings, commercial photography, boudoir and so much more. I’ve photographed weddings, ranches and landscapes in different states, I have some fine art landscapes prints in galleries, and I even have some of my work in Texas Monthly Magazine!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NOT A SMOOTH RIDE, but everything happens for a reason and you grow, learn, and carry on. 🙂 I lost a lot of my belongings after my storage unit was broken into, losing a bunch of things, but the main thing that was taken was my portfolio and backups of all my art and photos.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We like to say, “if it fits in a frame, we’ll photograph it!” However, Gabe Rene is known for weddings, captivating landscapes, and desirable boudoirs. We still love photographing and having fun with families of all sizes, graduates, pets, and so much more!

What sets us apart? We like to have fun and we absolutely LOVE when a client has an idea, and we make it EPIC!!!

What am I most proud of? That after every session, I see how happy they are from how nervous they are or how much they dread getting their photo taken! I have had many couples give me a hug and say that they had never had so much fun taking photos. That is what makes me proud, and take pride in doing what I F**KING LOVE!! (HAHA, can I say that??)
