Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Archer.
Hi Jason, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got here to roundabout way through an education in advertising, but segued into a film and animation career. After 10 years in animation, I felt like I had more control of my practice through visual art, and begin putting my ideas into a different medium, whether it be printmaking, painting, murals or mixed media. Many of the advertising principles have found their way into my artwork.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Art is a long game, it requires a lot of patience. Much of it is built on discovery and relationships, and it often takes time to find what you wish to create and the audience who is listening.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have created a variety of artworks as a director, animator, painter and muralist both collaborative and solo. My work includes political satire and Texas inspired characters such as Jesus Cornbread & the Alcoholics and Stray of the Dead. My early career in animation earned a Grammy and an MTV Video of the Year Award for directing and animating Frijolero, a music video for the Mexican rock band Molotov. From 2011-18, I launched the resurgence of Austin’s mural culture by producing and curating Frank Public Art, a rotating public art project in downtown Austin. I co-own Show Goat Mural Works, a mural company specializing in design and installation of large scale murals such as Daniel Johnston’s Love is the Question? Love is the Answer and my very own As Luck Would Have It. I also curate Preacher Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Austin, TX.
What makes you happy?
I like making people smile, it makes me happy. I love to garden and play soccer. But my wife and kids bring me the most joy.
