Rising Stars: Meet Jason of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Jason Hernandez, and I’m proud to call Bastrop County home. I grew up on the south side of Stony Point in Cedar Creek, Texas and one of my first jobs was working at Cothron’s Bicycles in South Austin. Over the years I was fortunate enough to work in 5 different bikes shops in Austin and DFW area pursuing two successful careers. One in the music industry as DJ Protege, and another in the restaurant world.

In 2018, my family and I returned to Cedar Creek to be closer to my favorite fishing spot, Lake Bastrop. I soon found myself searching for my next step. Should I get a job, go back to djing, or CREATE something new? After some soul-searching and prayer, the answer became clear: we need to open a bike shop.

From the moment I shared the idea with my parents and wife, I started looking for retail spaces. I quickly realized that most locations were too large and far beyond our budget. That’s when I had an idea—what if the shop could be housed in something smaller, like a box trailer or, even better, an Airstream?

After weeks of searching, I found a 1967 Airstream Land Yacht in desperate need of repair—gutted down to the frame, with bad wiring, rotten subfloors, and a lot of metal patchwork needed, but the shell was solid. So, we got to work transforming that old trailer into our dream bike shop named after our son, Mike’s Bikes.

It’s been a wild and rewarding journey, full of lessons in patience, faith, and perseverance. We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve the Bastrop County community, and we look forward to what’s ahead.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the begging it was definitely hard work rebuilding our Airstream. After construction on the trailer we then broke ground setting up the pad and deck. It was almost smooth sailing. We had a few minor setbacks like AC failing right before opeing day, our door knob broke our first week we opened ,and our first parts order almost not being delivered. But it was still fun. All the patience and preparation paid off.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Mike’s Bikes we service and repair all makes and models bicycles from department stores to high end race bike. If you have a bike that needs repairs, we got you.
