Rising Stars: Meet Jazmine Molano of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmine Molano.

Hi Jazmine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to be someone that made a difference but didn’t know what that really meant. I was fresh out of high school and didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up until I kinda fell into the beauty industry. My childhood best friend was the one who said “You should do beauty school. At least then you have something under your belt til you figure out what you wanna do.” So I did it. I immediately went to beauty school and almost 12 years later I still thank her for my “back up plan” because it became so much more.

My very first client in beauty school was a woman who was 3 years in remission from cancer. Her hair had grown in differently than what she was ever used to and more grey than she remembered. A simple brown color and haircut later I remember her saying “this is the most beautiful I’ve felt in a long time.” Thats when I realized I couldn’t change the world but just maybe I could change someone’s world.
From there a big time behind the chair was near a military base where most of my clientele were affiliated. A roller coaster of life changes, responsibilities, minimal support, when did someone have time to breathe let alone get their hair done?
I started focusing on not just the hair but really on them. Their time in my chair is THEIR time. A time to learn more about their hair, the home care, the actual creation of their dream hair, but more importantly, a time to remove all of their metaphorical hats or responsibilities and have the space to relax, fill their cup a bit, and be able to find or become their more true selves. There’s good vibes, some laughs, and a safe space here.

Some of my clients I’ve now had for almost the entirety of my career and I have been trusted to be part of their lives this long while continuously changing or maintaining their styles/fashions/ lifestyles with them.
I am still a stylist, now in Round Rock where I continue to create art and connections with everyone who sits in my chair.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always struggles or hardships in life, there are also beautiful and magical moments too. I know a lot of people hate the quote “things happen for a reason” but I really believe everything has led me to this point now.. with more stories to share and lessons learned.
As far as being a stylist goes, I’ve made PLENTY of mistakes, and I’m sure there are many more that’ll happen. At the end of the day, I am still only human and the best thing I can do is take accountability, learn from it and keep it moving!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist and educator at Urban Betty in Round Rock. I specialize in custom/transformative styles for my clients. The big chops, blonding transformations, pixie cuts to 28” extensions, vivids, you name it. I love the detail work put into a client’s final look. Sometimes I even enjoy the wild hair my clients have in last minute changes. *guilty smile*
I would pride myself in having a thorough consultation with my clients to not only talk about their dream hair but to also build a foundation of trust. We talk about their hair and then curate a realistic expectation or plan based on their lifestyle, maintenance, and overall goal at the starting canvas we have.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
For my stylists, I have to recommend ‘More Than a Method’ for education! An investment that I believe is definitely worth it!
In general, love reading, usually it’s something fictional just to get out of reality for a bit. And for those days that “the sky is falling” I like to just disconnect, go for a walk, journal or even color. It doesn’t have to be long but it’s just a bit of time to reconnect with myself.
My favorite book I love to recommend though is called “Furiously Happy” by Jenny Lawson. “A funny book about living with mental illness.” Already sounds a bit ridiculous, but sometimes that’s what we need.
