Rising Stars: Meet Julie Slattery of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Slattery.

Julie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We are a husband and wife whose paths kept crossing back in Chicago. We started playing together after the band Julie was in broke up and Jim offered to fill in on guitar. We got married and continued to play after moving to Austin. There are have been a few different line ups of The Discount Pills throughout the years, our current one being a four piece, but the core of us as a duo, writing our own music and arrangements and recording/ hosting shows has remained. Our latest EP “ Land of the Lost” was released almost 6 months ago and just because.. you know.. life happens.. we’re finally getting around to promoting it. Cheers!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working on anything creative can sometimes be tricky!!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a band that does original music and could probably best be described as Indie Folk Rock. Writing/ creating is one of our favorite parts! The instruments we use are kind of slightly different than usual.. Jim’s playing an acoustic guitar plugged in and Julie plays bass lines through an electric guitar. There are pedals involved but nothing is ever programmed and we are definitely proud of that. We also strive to sound as close to our recordings when we play live.. it’s important to us! We love our current lineup as a four piece with George Duron on drums and Jon Sanchez on keys/ guitar in addition to the two of us.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Having our own unique sound!
