Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Mckenzie.
Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was going to college & working part-time at a restaurant for two years after graduating high school. I was miserable. I was awful at my job & had zero motivation in school. I was constantly having panic attacks & knew I needed to change something. A girl I knew posted on Facebook that her salon was hiring a receptionist, & when I went in for the interview they hired me on the spot. I took the job & decided to quit school. After my first month working in a salon as a receptionist, I knew I didn’t want to work in any other environment. The job came very natural to me. I loved being around people all day. I was instantly obsessed with watching how stylists applied color & how they formulated color. It was all a secret code that I wanted to know. I started cosmetology school a year later and never looked back! I have now been in the industry for 11 years & have been licensed for nine years.
It really is the best job & I wouldn’t trade it for any other career.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. Starting your career after cosmetology school is VERY scary & really hard. I struggled a lot. I had a hard time finding a salon that I felt like I belonged in & it took a long time for me to be confident in myself. I would say it took about five years for me to finally feel like a good hairstylist/colorist. I really believe finding the right work environment determines a lot of your success in this career. You need to be around people you can trust & learn from.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a color specialist and have specialized in color my whole career. I am known for huge color transformations. I take a lot of people from brunette to blonde & tackle a lot of color corrections. I love anything that has a dramatic end result!
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I only believe in good luck. I would have to say I’m lucky with all the people I’ve met along the way. So many of my clients & coworkers have changed my life & inspired me without them even knowing it.
