Today we’d like to introduce you to Marinicia Cordova.
Hi Marinicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing hair for 9 years, I began immediately after high school. I’m from Denver and worked doing hair there for 6 years prior to moving to Austin. Deep roots has been the only salon I’ve worked at since moving here. I went through a fast tracked apprentice program there where I learned advanced color techniques as well as a technical haircutting course. I also learned extensions and offer k-tip and hand tied extensions. Since working there I’ve now become an educator for our costylist program and the lead educator for our phase 1 in the program. I’ve grown so much working for such a great company. This salon truly has helped boost me and my career immensely.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say the biggest struggles are hitting blocks of feeling unmotivated and working in environments that aren’t encouraging. There’s many mental blocks and battles in this career that you have to take control of for yourself in order to get over.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I offer all color services, various haircuts for women and men, and extension services including hand tied and k-tip extensions. Along with being a hairstylist I’m also a lead educator for our salon’s costylist program. I’m very proud of the career that I have made and continue to make for myself while also helping others grow into the stylists they want to be. I’m always willing to learn more and help others along the way. I try to always say yes to opportunities, especially in an industry that’s always changing.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The owners of deep roots, Melanie Jacobs who was also my mentor when I was in their costylist program, and Haven tibbetts. They are more than just owners, they truly stay involved and are always pushing us to reach our fullest potential. Carissa Mongelli, my manager, she’s the most supportive manager I’ve ever had and is constantly motivating me to go for all things even if I don’t fully believe i can accomplish them, she sees more in us than we ever will. And truly all of my coworkers, they are such genuine people who are constantly cheering and rooting for each other. And also my mom of course who was a hairdresser and helped me believe that this is a real career that you can do while truly doing what you love.
