Today we’d like to introduce you to Moises Quintero.
Hi Moises, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Shin Ku Karate began with a passion for Karate-Do and a desire to create a place where students could grow not only as athletes, but also as confident, disciplined, and respectful individuals.
Our journey started with Sensei Moisés Quintero’s many years of experience in karate and his commitment to teaching the values that martial arts had given him throughout his life. When we established Shin Ku Karate in Leander, Texas, our goal was to build more than just a dojo. We wanted to create a community where children, teenagers, and adults could feel supported, challenged, and inspired to become the best version of themselves.
We practice Shito-Ryu Karate and are connected with USA Karate and the Texas Sport Karate Federation. Over the years, our school has continued to grow both recreationally and competitively. Our students have participated in local, state, national, and international events, earning medals and national titles, and some have also earned opportunities to represent Team USA.
One of the things we are most proud of, however, is not only the competitive success. It is watching a shy child gain confidence, seeing a student learn how to handle both victory and defeat, and seeing families become part of our karate community.
Today, Shin Ku Karate continues to grow, but our mission remains the same: to provide quality Karate-Do instruction while teaching discipline, respect, perseverance, and confidence that our students can carry with them far beyond the tatami.
For us, Shin Ku Karate is more than a martial arts school—it is a family and a community that continues to grow together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road. Like many small businesses, we have faced challenges that have required a lot of patience, sacrifice, and adaptability.
One of the biggest challenges has been growing the school while maintaining the quality and personal attention that we want every student and family to receive. As the dojo has grown, we have had to learn how to balance teaching, administration, competitions, family responsibilities, and the day-to-day demands of running a business.
Another challenge has been building awareness in the community. Karate is very competitive, and there are many activities available for children, so earning the trust of families and showing them the value of traditional Karate-Do takes time. Much of our growth has come through consistency, word of mouth, and the relationships we have built with our students and their families.
Competitive karate has also brought its own challenges. Traveling to tournaments, preparing athletes, managing expenses, and helping students deal with both victories and disappointments requires a great deal of commitment.
But every challenge has helped us become stronger and more organized. We have learned to adapt, keep improving, and stay focused on why we started Shin Ku Karate in the first place: to create a positive environment where students can grow in confidence, discipline, and character.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Shin Ku Karate, we specialize in traditional Shito-Ryu Karate-Do while also offering a strong competitive development program for students who want to take their training to the next level.
We work with children, teenagers, and adults, from complete beginners to athletes preparing for state, national, and international competition. Our training focuses on both Kata and Kumite, but just as importantly, we emphasize discipline, respect, confidence, perseverance, responsibility, and personal growth.
We are known for creating a balance between traditional karate values and modern competitive training. Our students learn the technical foundation, etiquette, and philosophy of Karate-Do, while also having opportunities to compete through USA Karate and the Texas Sport Karate Federation.
We are very proud of the competitive achievements of our athletes. Our students have earned state and national titles, competed at major events across the country, and some have earned the opportunity to represent Team USA internationally. Those accomplishments are very meaningful to us because they reflect years of dedication, consistency, and teamwork.
However, what we are most proud of goes beyond medals. We are proud of seeing a shy child become more confident, a student learn how to manage pressure, an athlete develop resilience after a difficult loss, or a family realize that karate has become a positive part of their child’s life.
What truly sets Shin Ku Karate apart is the personal relationship we build with our students and families. We are a family-oriented dojo, and we make an effort to understand each student’s personality, strengths, challenges, and goals. We want every student to feel seen, supported, and encouraged to improve at their own pace.
For us, success is not measured only by trophies. Success is also discipline, confidence, character, consistency, and the ability to keep moving forward. That is what we want our students to carry with them both on and off the tatami.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes us happiest is seeing our students grow.
Of course, we celebrate medals, championships, and competitive success, but the moments that mean the most to us are often much simpler. Seeing a child walk into the dojo shy or unsure and, over time, become more confident, disciplined, and independent is incredibly rewarding.
We are also happy when we see families become part of our community and when students support and encourage one another. Karate has a unique way of bringing people together while teaching lessons that go far beyond the tatami.
What makes us happiest is knowing that our work can have a positive impact on a student’s life. If karate helps someone become more confident, resilient, respectful, or determined, then we feel that what we are doing truly has purpose.
