Rising Stars: Meet My Nextdoor Neighbor of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to My Nextdoor Neighbor.

Hi My Nextdoor Neighbor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My Nextdoor Neighbor is a psych-rock and jam-fusion project born out of the Austin and Bastrop music scenes. We live in that space where tight, grooving funk meets expansive, improvisational experimentation. We lean heavily into a DIY approach, from our recording process to our tours. Whether we’re opening for national acts like Dogs in a Pile at the Mohawk or Dizgo at Empire Garage, or playing a brewery in Bastrop, the goal is always to create a live music environment that feels like a unique show each time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest challenges, especially in today’s music scene is balancing our day jobs and our passion. We tour at least a few times per year out of Texas – and, as you know, Texas is a MASSIVE state. It can take a lot of planning and strategizing to make sure we’re able to keep touring outside of the state.

We’ve lost some members along the way, and it can be extra challenging in those transition periods to continue touring, but we’ve had some serious luck finding people who are not only passionate, but extremely talented musicians to join the project.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the Austin and Bastrop scenes, we’re becoming known for our expansive jams, and genre-bending sound. People usually recognize us for our tight, 5-string bass-driven pockets and our ability to pivot from a locked-in funk groove to a deep, psychedelic exploration to a bluegrass tune without missing a beat. Whether we’re at the Mohawk or a local brewery, we’re known for bringing a ‘big room’ sound to every stage we play.

We love to improvise, and can take a 5 minute song and turn it into a 30 minute dance party.

Our lighting designer is a HUGE part of our live performance, and improvises with us!

What matters most to you? Why?
We really want to build up the Austin jam scene. There are a ton of extremely talented bands that we’ve been playing with, and our “brother band” Rippleberry, is key to that community as well. We want to give people the experiences that made us passionate about this type of music, and build a community where you can recognize someone at a show and build friendships in the scene.
