Rising Stars: Meet Natalie Grigson of Central Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Grigson

Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
These days I work as a freelance writer, editor, and creative writing teacher, and long ago I started out as a writer, editor, and creative writing student.

Right out of college, I had a couple of full-time, in-office writing roles for (maybe) two years, but ever since then I’ve been freelancing. It affords me a lot of flexibility, and as anyone who knows me would attest, work / life balance is important to me. (Of course freelance also comes with its downsides.)

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Writing professionally is definitely not always a smooth road, especially now that the robots seem to be taking over. There are sometimes slow weeks or months or seasons, and then times when I’m so busy it’s overwhelming.

I will say, if you want to make writing – or anything in the creative world – your profession, you’re going to need a lot of gumption and determination.

(Some people call this stubbornness.)

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Over the years I’ve written a lot of fiction, and a lot of articles. Out of the books I’ve written, I’d say I love my Peter Able series the most. It was the first series I wrote (so of course there are some very cringey re-read moments), but the characters, the story, and the overall concept still make me smile.

(And sure, I’ll just say: This series was a bestselling series for a few years and that felt pretty good, too.)

As far as articles go, these days I mostly focus on writing about the city I know and love best (Austin), and women’s healthcare, reproductive rights, and sexual health.

I feel pretty disheartened as a woman in this country, and in Texas in particular. So any little thing I can do, I’ll do.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many people may not know that I work one-on-one supporting writers with their work, and also teach an ongoing creative writing group. Also, I subsist almost entirely off of dark chocolate.
