Rising Stars: Meet Phil Kegley of North Central Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Kegley.

Hi Phil, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a musician for most of my life, performing, notably, as a solo artist, in The Phil Kegley Band, and Chaos Revolution Theory

I relocated to Austin in 2014 from Madison, WI. My ambitions to create a studio space which embraced community, events, and an emphasis on production workflow. This led to co-found HowMuch?! Studios in North Central Austin.

I’m currently working with as many Austin artists, producing songs, leading sessions, assisting in releases, and supporting the local scene.

By trade, I am an audio engineer, audio/video editor, and mixing artist.

I am working on a new psych-rock release for 2026.

I would love to continue on this trajectory and keep coming out with new and better methods, work with even more artists, and keep building the dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The initial investments, commitments, and lifestyle are a lot. Partnerships and relationships can suffer. But all and all, it is very rewarding. I would not describe my experience in a creative industry and being a small business owner, self-promoting as necessarily smooth.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for being the lead engineer at HowMuch?! Studios. My own music is more of a passion project, but I intend to follow through on sharing more of that when I feel my studio is more deeply rooted.

I’m proud of my experience working with gear and studio buildouts/installation. I also pride myself on my ability to turn tasks such as editing into mindless processes and being able to turn my tolerance switch “on” when it comes to working on tedious steps in any project.

I feel like I would say that, in no reference to the determination of others, I am always striving to serve an artist with the treatment of my own projects.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like reliability and consistency are the most important.
