Today we’d like to introduce you to Poet Elizondo.
Hi Poet, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from Kyle, TX (basically born & raised)
I’ve Always been around music since I can remember. My mom loved R&B and 80’s rock, my uncle played trumpet and loved Jazz, my dad liked country, oldies and all types of rock and being Mexican, Spanish music was always being played (from Tejano, Oldies like Luis Miguel, cumbia etc.) I fell in love with rap when my uncle bought me “The Eminem Show” & “Nellyville” CD’s when I was 7. Fast forward to teaching myself how to rap and seeing the older kids in school freestyle during lunch and wanting to be able to join in I got better with time, bought my first microphone, learned how to record myself on the computer, upload songs on MySpace / YouTube which turned into passing out CD’s and T shirts in high school and started battle rapping to learn how to rock a stage and handle a crowd by myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Friends & family not believing you the same way you believe in yourself. Spending hundreds of dollars for music/ videos just to get a couple of likes and shares.
Driving to different cities to battle rap and essentially losing on stage in front of everyone and feeling defeated. Thinking why am I doing this
Seeing other people get the love you think you should be getting when it comes to music.
Losing my bestfriend who I did music with to an unfortunate suicide and not knowing if it was worth doing music anymore.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a rapper / musician.
I would say one of my specialties is being relatable in a world (rap music world) where there is a lot of showboating and bragging. Being able to explain my a / my situation in song form where it doesn’t seem forced or un authentic and being vulnerable is where I think I stand out the most. Also where I think I stand out is having punchlines / quotables.
On my new EP “it’s for the best” I have songs displaying my punchlines and wit with songs like “Joey Bananas, Times like this & Episode 3” and other songs being vulnerable and trying to talk myself through my own feelings like “Poets Intro & We’ll always have Paris”
One of my favorite songs (and proudest I’ve been of myself when writing a song) is a song called on that album called “Twisted” which explains my parents falling out from my dad’s point of view. I tried to think of what a early 20’s version of my dad would say to my mom about their break up when feelings were still fresh & raw (and after a couple of drinks lol) The song also samples Keith’s sweat’s twisted which is a song that my mom absolutely loves and probably the only R&B song that my dad sings along to. So with twisted coming out in 96’ (year I was born) and them both always playing the song made it the perfect sample for what I was trying to do.
I grew up with my mom & with my dad being 5 hours away was kind of hard to spend time together so being able to write from his perspective & tell a side (the man’s / baby father side) that seems to get looked over often and being able to nail it on the head was an accomplishment for me.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think finding people who are like minded and also people who are opposite who possess the talent or creativity that you lack can help a lot.
Reaching out & saying you’re a fan of someone isn’t a bad thing and can create opportunities and friendships that will get you places money can’t.
And even though it might sound a little crazy, just be a good genuine person lol
