Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Thompson.
Hi Skye, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always joke that I’ve been a singer since I was born…and according to my cousins, that’s not much of an exaggeration. They still tell stories about little me, barely out of diapers, making them sit down and be my audience while I sang into a vacuum cleaner like it was a microphone. Performing has quite literally always been a part of who I am.
I spent most of my childhood in theater and singing in different choirs, finding just about any excuse I could to be on a stage. Music and performing were always where I felt most at home, and as I got older, that never really went away.
Raul, my guitarist, and I met in Austin in 2021, and we quickly realized how naturally we worked together musically. In 2022, Skye & the Echoes officially began to take shape, and from there we started building the band one show, one venue, and one connection at a time.
When we started, virtually no one knew who we were. Over the last few years, we’ve worked our way up from those early gigs into becoming a highly sought-after band in the Austin area, performing at private events, weddings, parties, wineries, bars, and venues all across the city and greater Austin area. We’ve built our reputation not only around our sound and versatility, but around creating an experience, reading the room, connecting with the crowd, and bringing an energy that makes people want to stay, sing along, and have a good time.
It’s incredibly rewarding to look back at where we started and see how much we’ve grown, especially now as we’re releasing original music and stepping into the next chapter of Skye & the Echoes. What started with a little girl singing into a vacuum cleaner has somehow turned into getting to perform for crowds all over Austin, and I think little me would be pretty thrilled about that.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I try to maintain the mindset that “everything always works out for me.” We’ve faced countless “no’s,” growing pains with bringing in new members (including people who nearly pulled apart what we had built) and the constant challenge of pursuing a music career while still working full-time jobs.
But somehow, everything that has tried to break us has ultimately brought us closer to where we’re meant to be. Every setback has redirected us, every wrong fit has made the core of the band stronger, and every “no” has pushed us toward the right “yes.” Looking at where we are now, I really do believe it all worked out the way it was supposed to.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
By day, I work in property management, and outside of that, I sing whenever and wherever I possibly can! I’m especially proud of the music video we recently released for our first single, “Better Now (Begin Again).” It took a huge amount of planning and schedule coordination, and we were incredibly lucky to have an amazing group of talented people who believed in us and helped bring the vision to life.
I think what sets me apart most is my drive. I know I’m meant to be on stage, and I’m willing to keep working, learning, and doing whatever it takes to make that my reality. I don’t really see giving up as an option.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Austin is the community, especially within the music and creative scene. There are so many incredibly talented people here who genuinely want to see each other succeed, and so much of what we’ve been able to accomplish as a band has come from the relationships and friendships we’ve built in this city. There’s always somewhere to play, someone to collaborate with, or something new to experience.
What I like least is probably how quickly Austin is growing and changing. Growth is exciting, but it can also make it harder for the local artists, musicians, venues, and small businesses that give Austin its personality to keep up. I hope that as the city continues to grow, we don’t lose the weird, creative, music-loving heart that made Austin so special, to me and many others, in the first place.
