Rising Stars: Meet Vicente Cedillos of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicente Cedillos.

Hi Vicente, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My photography journey has been anything but traditional. Before launching VC Photography, I spent nearly three decades serving in the military—first in the U.S. Navy and later in the Texas Army National Guard, where I retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. Throughout my military career, I held leadership and technical roles that required discipline, attention to detail, organization, and a commitment to excellence. Those same principles now influence every aspect of my business.

Photography started as a creative outlet and a way to document my own family’s memories and sporting events. Over time, I realized I was drawn to the energy, emotion, and storytelling that sports photography provides. There’s something special about freezing a split second of determination, celebration, or focus and turning it into an image that athletes and families will remember for years.

What began as a passion gradually evolved into VC Photography, a sports-focused photography brand serving Buda, Austin, Kyle, San Marcos, and communities throughout Central Texas. Today, I specialize in action photography, athlete branding, and team media days. My goal isn’t simply to take photos—it’s to create bold, professional imagery that helps athletes feel confident, recognized, and celebrated.

One of the things that sets VC Photography apart is the emphasis on creating a premium experience. I draw inspiration from major athletic brands like Nike and ESPN, focusing on cinematic visuals that make athletes feel like they’re part of something bigger than a typical photo session. Whether I’m photographing a youth athlete, a high school varsity team, or a college athlete, I approach every session with the same level of professionalism and attention to detail.

Looking back, the transition from military service to entrepreneurship has been incredibly rewarding. The leadership lessons I learned over the years continue to guide me as I build relationships with coaches, athletes, schools, and families across Central Texas. Today, VC Photography continues to grow, and I’m excited about the opportunity to help even more athletes tell their stories through powerful visual content.

At the heart of everything I do is the belief that every athlete deserves to be seen at their best—which is why our tagline is “Where Bold Athletes Meet Bold Visuals.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like most businesses, the road hasn’t been completely smooth, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.

One of the biggest challenges was building a business while still serving in the military and preparing for retirement. For many years, photography was something I pursued on evenings and weekends, and in any free time I could find. Balancing military responsibilities, family life, and growing a business required considerable discipline and long hours.

Another challenge was finding my niche. Early on, I photographed a variety of subjects, but I eventually realized my passion was sports. Once I committed to focusing on athletes, action photography, and media days, everything started to align more closely with the vision I had for the brand. That decision allowed me to develop a clear identity and create a more specialized experience for athletes, coaches, and schools.

Like many entrepreneurs, there were also challenges related to building awareness and trust. When you’re a newer business, people don’t always know who you are or what makes you different. I spent countless hours refining my style, improving my skills, networking with coaches and organizations, and consistently showing up for the community. Every opportunity became a chance to prove myself and build relationships.

Photography itself comes with unique challenges as well. Sporting events don’t pause for perfect lighting, weather, or ideal conditions. You have to be prepared to adapt quickly and still deliver high-quality results. Learning to perform in those environments consistently helped me grow not only as a photographer but also as a business owner.

The good news is that every challenge reinforced the same lessons I learned throughout my military career: stay disciplined, stay adaptable, and keep moving forward. Looking back, I’m grateful for the obstacles because they helped shape VC Photography into the brand it is today. They also make the successes even more meaningful when I see athletes excited about their images, programs using our content throughout the season, and the relationships we’ve built across Central Texas.

Entrepreneurship isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you’re passionate about the people you serve and the work you’re creating.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in sports action photography, team media days, and athlete branding sessions for schools, teams, and athletes across Central Texas.

What I enjoy most is capturing the intensity, emotion, and hard work that athletes put into their sport. Whether it’s a game-winning moment under the Friday night lights or a media day portrait, my goal is to create images that athletes are proud to share and remember.

What sets me apart is a combination of creativity and professionalism, focusing on bold, cinematic imagery that helps athletes and programs stand out.

What I’m most proud of is the impact the photos have on the athletes themselves. Seeing their confidence grow when they see a professional image of themselves and helping schools showcase their programs is what makes this work so rewarding.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people know me as the sports photographer running around football fields, wrestling mats, and media days with a camera in hand, but what they may not know is that I’m currently on a mission to turn my front lawn into something that looks like a golf course.

What started as a simple lawn project has turned into a full-blown hobby. I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit researching Bermuda grass, mowing schedules, irrigation, fertilizers, weed control, and lawn maintenance techniques. There’s something satisfying about taking an ordinary yard and continuously improving it week after week.

In a way, it’s not that different from photography. Both require patience, consistency, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. You don’t get great results overnight—you get them through small improvements over time.

The goal? A front lawn so clean and well-maintained that people wonder if it belongs on a golf course.
