Brandon Reich shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Brandon, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes absolutely! I’m currently looking to fill my schedule with gigs, and offering entry level rates with over 15 years experience.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a freelance filmmaker who has taken time off to care for my two boys. It’s unique because most families I know the mom sacrifices her career rather than the dad. I love filmmaking, so it was hard to step back at first. It’s grown me a lot personally, and I’m blessed to be able to invest in my family. I’m now accepting more gigs that our boys are a little older.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I’ve had some amazing teachers and mentors. Some of them were peers at school. In entrainment business though, who stands out is my late boss, Bill Warr, or better known in Houston as Bill Moffett. He had this powerful voice from being a rock ‘n’ roll DJ, which enabled me to listen to every word he said. I would also get mentorship from my bosses at the Houston Film Commission, The Second City Chicago, and the Austin Film Society. These days I’m more interested in getting practical life wisdom, and I meet with my friend Paul Haulsey from church. I’m grateful to everyone that has taken valuable time to pour into me.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. It’s hard for me to admit because I’ve never envisioned being the type of person to quit. If I’m being honest, I’m overcoming this obstacle as you read this. It’s a different game when you’re looking at 40, have a wife, two kids and a dog. There are industry challenges such as new technology making specialized skills more accessible, and practical challenges like not as much available time. I’m proud that I can say I’m still willing to learn and grow even when I have accomplished a lot more than I ever thought possible. Filmmaking is humbling and also rewarding in that way.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Texas has its own culture. Even though I’ve lived in NYC, Chicago, and Denver, I still get offended if I see Texas or Texans portrayed in a way that is untrue.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
