Knives Monroe shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Knives, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
At this point in my life and career I would render myself obsolete.
I’d hire someone who could do what I do, but better or different.
Someone who could film, edit, produce.
I’d delegate my time intensive duties so I could focus more clearly on ideas and direction.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Knives Monroe.
Creative Director of CTX Home Gyms at the moment.
I’m a writer, director, videographer, editor, producer, and over all shit poster.
I’m currently working on growing our brand at CTX Home Gyms, and scaling our digital footprint to number one in our space.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Oh man, what a great question.
Besides the obvious person who bought all the Knives Monroe stock they could when it was very affordable, my wife Clare, the person who saw me clearly before I could see myself was my mentor Dakota Meyer.
I’ve always said, sometimes all you need is that one person who sees something in you that nobody else wants to admit.
He saw my potential, he let me know it, and empowered me to rise above my own expectations of myself.
The few short years we spent working closely together still impacts me to this day.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
A few times I year I consider hanging it up.
Truth is I don’t know how to quit.
This creative economy game is a last man standing match.
Sometimes its just about handcuffing yourself to the boat and riding into the storm.
I’m still here and I’ve made it out alive so must account for something.
But to answer your question I’ve considered quitting dozens of times, it just doesn’t take.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me, is the real me, its just the tip of the iceberg.
I’m unapologetically myself, but I’m also a consummate professional.
You gotta be able to read the room you’re in and present the best version of yourself contextually for the room.
At home, that version of me is real.
At work, that version of me is real.
Rest assured the online version of me is real.
They’re all just fragments of a whole, however.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I’d stop waiting for ‘atta boys’ that may never come.
I’d stop investing in people that aren’t willing to invest in themselves.
I’d stop waiting.
