Story & Lesson Highlights with Maribel Rubio

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Maribel Rubio. Check out our conversation below.

Maribel, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true joy was when my son was about 3 months old. He is my first born and only son. He and I were relaxing on the bed. There was a moment where he looked at me and we held each others gaze for a moment and it hit me. The best way I can describe it was bliss. I began to cry tears of joy and was taken back by the rush of emotions. I felt this immense understanding and sense of peace. It was almost like an out of body experience. I felt so much gratitude for my son as well as gratitude for being blessed to participate in the sacred experience of motherhood. I felt this wave of love that is like no other.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well I am a visual artist as well as a Vocalist and musician.I have been in Austin for 15 years but originally, I am the beautiful city of El Paso. I moved to Austin to explore a different music scene and have stayed ever since. After many artistic collaborations, I started a cover band called Rubi Groove. We cover a wide range of genres and recently I expanded and started a jazz band. I once sang at Austin City Hall for Mayor Leffingwell and I’m honored to have been the chosen as the performer for the Cedar Park chamber of commerce event every year for the past 4 years. I have been lucky to have sang at many special venues throughout my time here. What makes my band special is that all of the musicians that I work with are extremely talented and dedicated guys and gals. A huge part of my creative outlet is painting and sketching everyday as well as songwriting and music production.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
There have been many moments in my life that have shaped how I see the world but the one at the top of my list thus far is when I became a mom to my beautiful son Emiliano. Finding out I was pregnant was such a whirlwind of emotions ranging from fear and utter joy. It shaped how I see the world by putting everything in my life into focus. A focus I had never experienced before. All of the things in my life both small and big held a different meaning now and frankly nothing mattered anymore. The only thing that mattered now was this blessing growing inside of my belly and the divine responsibility that had been bestowed upon me. My life would never be the same and I am so grateful for that.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self that I am enough.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Some of the biggest lies my industry tell itself are that we are not worthy of getting paid fair wages for our creative talents and all of our efforts. it’s been an ongoing issue in the music scene. perhaps because it’s so saturated and many artists are willing to accept less than what they are worth.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace in the privacy of my home studio. late at night with my candles lit. Letting my creativity flow. Putting my favorite etta james record on. listening to inspiring podcasts and working on my songs.
