Every day we have a choice. We can support an up and coming podcaster, try a new family-run restaurant, join a boutique gym started by a local fitness champ or we could keep giving away our money to the handful of giants who already control so much of our commerce. Our daily decisions impact the kind world we live in; if we want a world where small businesses are growing and artists and creatives are thriving then we should support them with our time, money and attention. We’re proud to highlight inspiring creatives and entrepreneurs each week in Hidden Gems series. Check out some of our latest local gem features below.

Over the course of those four years, I stayed connected with my community by becoming an active member of Alpha Phi Omega (ΑΦΩ), a National Service Fraternity. A few years after graduating, I realized that I hadn’t taken the right path, with my true passion still remaining in service to others. With various members of my family in the mental health and social work fields already, I leveraged their insight and decided to become a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). With my LMSW in-tow, I moved to Austin and started to put in the work to gain my final license as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), which I am in the final stages of completing at this time. I was born and raised here in Austin. From a young age, I was drawn to creativity, spending my free time writing and starring in plays, reading endless amounts of books, playing piano, violin, and singing, and dreaming of becoming a famous actress someday. In high school I fell in love with performing in musicals and plays, and once emphatically told my dad, “Singing is my therapy!” When it came time to choose a major and enter college, I fell victim to the classic trap of needing to be “realistic” with my career aspirations. I chose to major in Public Relations and Advertising because I heard I could use my love of writing, and also felt it was broad enough to be able to have good job prospects. Read More>>

During this time, I was also teaching herbalism, leading plant walks, doing herbal consultations, and raising a child. Since the sale of Texas Medicinals in 2023, my focus today is primarily on teaching full-time at the school I founded here in Austin. Sacred Journey School of Herbalism does not have a brick and mortar location; we meet in outdoor locations all over central Texas to learn about the wild plants growing around us, how to identify them, build relationships with them, and make medicine with them. I originally studied to become an elementary school teacher while doing children and family photography on the side. However, I ultimately chose to pursue a career in marketing and photography instead. I worked as a photographer in merchandising with James Avery, but when COVID hit, I had to pivot. That’s when I found Augusta Vin—the most beautiful winery I had ever seen in the Texas Hill Country. Nearly four years later, I’m proud to be the Marketing Director, combining my passion for photography, storytelling, and the world of wine. Read More>>

Growing up in Santa Barbara, California meant that I spent my life at either the library, the beach, or in the weight room. I eventually moved to Spain and ended up spending much of my twenties living in Spain and Italy. Later, while pursuing my doctorate in Hispanic literature at Indiana University in Bloomington, I worked in the student gym and even was an elected representative on the student health/wellness advisory committee. During school breaks, I could go with a friend to her family’s home in nearby Chicago. When visiting, I was absolutely mesmerized by the library of my bestie’s dad (he was a retired orthopedic surgeon) and I used to always say, “If I had two lives to live, I’d be an orthopedic surgeon” Read More>>

I started my journey in Texas, where the state requires 1,000 hours to qualify for the cosmetology exam. I then moved to Paul Mitchell, excited to continue, only to find out that I couldn’t transfer any of my previous hours. I had to start from scratch all over again. Read More>>

I started my journey in real estate while still in high school at Morton Ranch High School. Upon graduating from college in 2008, I found myself without an active music project. Over the next few months I started connecting with fellow musicians and artists who were also looking for something new. Motion Planet was born as a band with only three members, two instruments, and one song sometime in 2009 or 2010. In between getting married to my wife, Kristen, and building a life and household together, I continued to create/rehearse/perform/record with MP. A decade and a half later, we are a tight quartet and have released a new record – “Ahead Of The Weather.” We are currently setting up shows for 2025 and beyond. Read More>>

Within two years, I became the head roaster at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters, began dating the person who would become my wife, and discovered a passion for videography. I’m from El Paso, Texas originally, and lived on the border of Mexico my entire life. I started college at the University of Texas at El Paso, majoring in film production. It was there I committed to my dreams of becoming a film director and my parents supported me in transferring to central Texas to attend Texas State University. My background is in theatre, choir, and modeling, and somewhere in the mix of high school, I discovered I loved video making and started a YouTube channel. I learned to create, entertain, and edit, and it’s where my love of filmmaking began. Read More>>

I grew up loving music. I played violin and guitar as a child. I’m pretty sure I developed tinnitus due to loud and excessive listening to punk rock and hip-hop for hours on end off of my iPod nano. Did those all of those lyrics directly resonate with me as a 2nd generation Filipino-American Missionary’s Kid growing up in the suburbs of Dallas, TX? Absolutely not, but I felt so connected to the music and the musicians because I felt like I was experiencing their experiences and feeling their emotions through their musical expression. And it drew me closer and closer to loving how music has that power to connect people through lived human experiences and emotions. Read More>>

I started my professional career at the age of 16 when I was still in school. Once I finished school I began my studies as an esthetician and trained myself over the years. I arrived in Austin and as a Colombian immigrant I had many challenges at the beginning, language, culture and finding a way to continue doing what I am passionate about. So I put the engines in motion, I decided to start studying different aesthetic studies in the United States and learn the language, after a lot of work and study I was finally able to obtain all the permits and licenses I needed to be able to operate as a medspa where we receive all the people and especially the Latin community that was in need of this confident space where they could have their trusted treatments. During my senior year of high school, I entered a backpack design competition hosted by Herschel Supply Co, Pensole Lewis College of Business and Design, and the National Art Educators Association. I put everything into creating a design that felt personal yet practical, and to my surprise, I ended up winning. The prize included a $10,000 scholarship and a trip to Herschel Supply Co’s headquarters in Vancouver, where I got to see a sample of my backpack brought to life. Watching something I designed go from idea to reality was an unforgettable experience and made me realize that I wanted to pursue design as a career. Read More>>

When I started Synth Babe Productions, I was incredibly lost, like many others who had lost their place in the tech industry. My identity was deeply intertwined with my role as a co-founder and Chief Operating Officer. My life revolved around my team and the product we were building. The burnout I experienced took a severe toll on my body and strained many of my social, romantic, and familial relationships. I’m still on the journey of helping my body recover from that period of intense stress. The tech and startup world isn’t exactly welcoming to those who lead with compassion and aim to create change. Madison Popwell
Hello, I am Madison Popwell. Owner and operator of Sugarfluent Bakery. I started this business in 2019 as a way to share my passion of baked goods and art with my community. I call myself “Sugarfluent” because I offer drop cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and treats of all kinds. I took a leap of faith and started creating and testing recipes to sell after growing up with a love for cooking and baking. I used to watch solely the food network as a child/young adult and am completely self taught. I went to school and got my degree in Economics and Business Administration because I’ve always known I’d be an entrepreneur. Now I offer custom orders, pre sales for holidays and run a cookie cart once a month all from my home based bakery in Buda! I’m truly so happy to be able to do something I love and not only sell sweet treats but the feeling of love and thoughtfulness that others get when giving and receiving such a special and unique edible piece of art! Determined to deepen my expertise, I enrolled at the Avenue Five Institute in 2017 to study cosmetology. It gave me the confidence and financial freedom to fully dedicate myself to this career, reinforcing that I was exactly where I was meant to be. Read More>>

Much like everyone else in 2020, I found myself feeling a bit adrift, you might say. The world I had pledged my life to had been decimated and relegated to creating the closest thing to the intentional cuisine in a takeout and fast-food fashion. My industry, the hospitality industry, was beyond struggling; we were strangled as we attempted to move forward through a fog of uncertain length and outcome. I spoke to my compadres in the culinary community, and we all lamented what we missed: the connection, the hospitality, the passion, and more. Read More>>
